As the economy continues to decline and job losses increase, the problem of homelessness has become more pronounced in our community. YWCA believes in safe, secure housing and seeks to bring hope to single women in our community.
For more than 12 years, the YWCA has operated the Women In Transition (WIT) Program. With safe, affordable housing and comprehensive support services, single women have the opportunity to move their lives to firmer foundations. From computer training to budgeting skills to preparing for job interviews and health and fitness, the YWCA offers participants a variety of opportunties to grow and set goals for the future.
In 2008, seven participants attended Central Piedmont Community College, while an eighth enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Another WIT graduate returned to the accounting profession and purchased a home in less than a year. In a follow-up with 31 graduates, 30 reported they were continuing to live successfully in permanent housing after leaving our WIT Program.
This experience helped me more than words can express. It took me places, showed me things about myself, and most important, eliminated things in my life that meant me no good. -Graduate, WIT Program
