getting ahead program
In 2010, YWCA Central Carolinas started an innovative program dedicated to education, conversation and life planning. "Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-by-World" is a series of "kitchen table" conversations that provide a way for those living in YWCA transitional housing programs to understand their circumstances within a broader context and explore the impact poverty has on individuals, families and their communities. These kitchen table discussions were built upon research from Bridges Out of Poverty, by Dr. Ruby Payne.
During this informative 15-week series, women meet in an informal group, with each session lasting two and a half hours.
Participants are immersed in experiences of investigation and discovery, where they are exposed to tangible tools that assist them in navigating a middle class world so they have more resources to move from survival to stability.
"I am very excited about being able to share my new-found knowledge with others and I'm very grateful to have this opportunity through the YWCA," said Sheri Lucas, a WIT participant in the program. "I hope many other women will have the same opportunity I have had."
