Total Yoga Classes *FREE FOR MEMBERS!
Total Yoga takes a therapeutic approach to yoga, focusing on holistic, systemic wellness. The accessiblility for everyone suports improvement in mental as well as physical health. Total Yoga is based on the principles of Subtle Yoga, Sivananda Yoga, Kripalu Yoga, Color Me Yoga for Children, & YogArt (an approach blending yoga and expressive arts, created by Maria Curran) and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction. It takes into account the ancient yogic system of the 8-limbed path. A typical class incorporates breathing practice, meditation practice, postures or asanas, deep relaxation, and group discussion designed to promote self-awareness. Postures used are accessible and adaptable, as well as trauma-informed, encouraging practitioners to incorporate aspects into their daily lives.
Total Yoga Instructors
Maria Curran, Ph.D., LPCS-Masters level is a professional counselor and President of The Center for Creativity and Healing, PC. Maria has practiced counseling in Charlotte for 20 years, incorporating her training in yoga, dance/movement, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and expressive arts in both therapy and workshop/class faciliation. Maria formerly taught dance at the Harris YMCA Dance Studio and worked as a NC Wolf Trap Teaching Artist for 3 years. Maria also has 25 years of experience and training in family and group dynamics, trauma/acute stress intervention/prevention and play/expressive arts facilitation. Maria is currently pursuing her certification in Subtle Yoga, a form of therapuetic yoga.
Sherry Lyerly-Tarner, MS, LPCA, RT is a professional counselor, registered Color Me Yoga Teacher for children, and a Reiki Master teacher. Sherry has an extensive background in dance and yoga for more than 20 years, and currently teaches yoga at Community Charter Elementary School, as well as at The Renfrew Center, an eating disorders clinic, here in Charlotte. Sherry is a counselor at The Center for Creativity and Healing where she integrates yoga and holistic healing and into her clinical practice. Sherry formerly taught yoga in New York, studied at Sivananda Yoga, and with Jon Kabat-Zinn in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in Education, both in New York. Sherry is currently working towards certification in Subtle Yoga, a form of therapeutic yoga.
